Duties of the Setup Team at Ascension

The Setup Team should arrive about an hour before the service (9:00am), if you are doing the setup on Sunday, and have things set up by twenty minutes before the service.

All the materials needed for setting up the church sanctuary are found in two cupboards in the Vestry.  The place of the key for the cupboards will be shown to you.

1. The Altar.

Move the altar from the back wall forward so that the front edge of the altar is at the edge of the opening for the font.

Lift up the altar onto the 4 black blocks (if by yourself do this in three steps so that the stress on the legs of the altar is minimized - see photos).

Unroll the altar frontal onto the altar and slide the large diameter black poles on the bottom of the back side and the small diameter black poles on the front side at the bottom.

Roll out the altar cloth on the top of the altar to the front edge and centre it (see embroidered "ihs", the Greek letters for Jesus).

Place the candles on each back corner and the crucifix in the centre at the back.

2. The Sanctuary (other than the altar).

Interior lights for the church (if setting up on Sunday morning):

  • In the nave (where the congregation sits), on the wall to the right of the sanctuary, behind a plant and to the left of the offertory bag stand, there are three light switches, turn them all on.
  • There is also a light switch on the wall behind the altar just under the screen (you will need a chair!)

Piano - Push the piano out of the way towards the wall.

Hymn Board - Take the hymn board off the wall (or fold it against the wall).

Holy Trinity Icon - Set up the icon on the wooden easel in the centre behind the altar (after the altar has been set up).  Please don't touch the front side of the icon, but hold only by the sides. Adjust the bottom support on the easel, that the icon sits on, to the highest position.  Place one of the blue Adventist service books behind the icon on the easel to help the icon stand more upright.

Move the lectern and the pulpit to the sides (away from the centre of the sanctuary) by about 40 cm.

Place the Lectern Bible on the lectern and open it to the Epistle reading for that Sunday.

Sanctuary Chairs - Take one of the chairs and place it behind the lectern on the Epistle side (right side) of the sanctuary and the other two on the Gospel side (left side) of the sanctuary under the window.

Burgundy Curtains - Open the curtains on the wall on the Gospel side.

Electrical Equipment - Take away the microphones by the pulpit and lean them on the floor against the left wall, lean the monitor also over on the ground with them, hidden from sight in the nave by the flowers and behind one of the chairs used by the server.

Credence Table - Place a small table, found in the vestry, on the left wall under the window (with a chair on either side).  Put a white cloth on it and place the minora on top of it.

3. The Nave (the main body of the church)

The Advertising Signs

One sign is a roll-up sign on its own stand, found in the vestry cupboard.  Set it up in the vestibule (between the doors to outside and the doors to enter the nave).

One sign is to be placed on the outside fence in front of the Adventist sign.  There are four elastic hooks to hold the four corners to the fence.

The Kneelers

Kneelers are found under a table at the back of the church.
Place two kneeler cushions in front of every row of chairs except the front row of chairs in each section of chairs.  The zipper on the side of the kneeler should be facing the back of the church.

Place three kneeler cushions on the first step into the sanctuary: one to the left of centre; two to the right of centre; and leave a space of one kneeler cushion length in the centre (the Steward will move one to the centre later during the offertory hymn).  The zippers should be hidden to the back so not visible to the congregation.

The Sound System

Take the three covers off the sound system cabinet and place them out of the way at the back (between the stacks of chairs).

Take any one of the keys hanging inside on the right wall of the sound system cabinet and open the door on the left lower side of the cabinet.  There you will find the amplifiers etc.  Turn on the on switch for each of the four units.

The large sound mixer on the top shelf of the cabinet has many sliding switches.  Slide no. 3, no. 14 and the main slider, which is the one at the far right side of the mixer, to the position about 3/4 to the top (you can see the suggested ideal volume on the mixer panel).

At the back of the mixer you will need to: (1) connect the remote microphone to no. 14 outlet (remote mic is found in a blue box in the vestry cupboard); and (2) flick the toggle switch on the far right side at the back to turn the mixer on - a green light should come on the front when you do this.
