Duties of the Altar Server at Ascension
The Altar Server should arrive 30 minutes before the service (9:30am) and have the altar and the credence table set up by 15 minutes before the service (9:45am). When arriving to the church you should first put on a cassock (the black garment) before going into the church to set up the altar and credence table. Before this, you may wish to say a prayer in the nave asking for God to recollect your heart and make you ready to serve at His holy altar.
1. Setting up the Altar
Place the portable altar in the centre to the front edge of the altar and place a corporal (the larger linen cloth) over it.
Add the chalice and paten, cover chalice with purificator, small paten, priest's host, pall, veil and burse (using the liturgical colour of the season). (see photos below)
2. The Credence Table
In the vestry, place 40 hosts in the bread bowl (in four stacks of 10), and fill the wine cruet full, the water cruet half-full. Put water in the small jug for ablutions.
On the left side of the table, set up the bread in a bowl with a pall (square linen cover) over it, the wine and water behind it, with the wine on the right side, water on the left, and the handles pointing to the back. On the right side of the credence table is a small jug and bowl with a purificator (the one with a shell on it). See photos below.
3. Before the Service
Light the candles in the sanctuary 15 minutes before the service starts. First the altar candles, light the Epistle candle (right side) and, after that, the Gospel candle (left side). Then light the seven candles of the minora on the credence table.
Return to the Vestry and put on your surplice and say with the priest the preparatory prayers. Be ready for this 10 minutes before the service.
