We are introducing a Gradual Psalm in our Liturgy, sung in Plainsong

Normally there is music sung between the two main Bible readings on a Sunday - the Epistle and the Gospel.  We've been singing a hymn at this point, called the Gradual, but we will replace that with a Gradual Psalm, returning to a more ancient practice.  The term gradual comes "from the practice of singing it either on the altar steps or while the deacon was ascending the steps of the ambo" (the raised platform from where the Gospel was read) [step in Latin is gradus]. [Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church]

The Gradual Psalm is usually a portion of a Psalm and it is chosen to relate to the readings and theme of a particular Sunday in the Church calendar.  It is an interesting practice to try to understand why this particular Psalm or Psalm portion was chosen.

Plainsong is a kind of Gregorian chant. It is sung in unison, and is a simple tune that repeats with each verse of the Psalm.  Here is an example with the setting from Healey Willan's Plainsong edition of the Canadian Psalter (1963).  Click on the link to download a Word document with music and text:

Ascension Day - Psalm 68:1-6

(The first two notes are only used for the capitalized words in the first verse. When you see a bolded syllable, that indicates a change in tone from the whole note.)

The Daily Offices of Morning and Evening Prayer

Daily Bible Readings

These readings come from the Church of England's 1955 draft revision to their 1922 authorized daily office lectionary.  The readings are connected with the Church Year.  If you follow this lectionary you will read through most of the Old Testament once and the whole of the New Testament twice.
